Exploring Indonesian and Malayalam Languages through Interpreting

EDSA (07/11/2024) - The collaboration class activity entitled “Exploring Indonesian and Malayalam Languages through Interpreting” was successfully held online, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. This collaborative class activity was attended by IAIN Lhokseumawe English Department students and Emeacollege of arts and Science Kondotty students, Kerala-India.

This activity was organized by students of the English Department as a learning course of Translation and Inerpreting Practice. The purpose of this event was to give English students experience in interpreting languages and learning about the mechanics of translation and interpretation.

This activity presents a student controller from Emeacollege of Arts and Science, Kendotty, Kerala-India, the Indian student controller is Lt. Abdul Rasheed Bavus, a lecturer at the college who provides a space for Tadris English students to interact with his students.

This collaborative class not only helps English Department students learn to translate and interpret languages, but English Department students also gain new knowledge about the culture, ethnicity and uniqueness that exists in Kerala-India, and vice versa. These inter-campus students exchanged cultures in their respective regions.

During this learning activity, students from both campuses used three languages, namely Indonesian, Malayalam, and English. Tadris English students, IAIN Lhokseumawe, communicate with Emeacollege of Arts and Science students, Kondotty, dividing groups consisting of 2 students per group, the two students then share their tasks, the first student speaks using Indonesian and then interpreted into English by the other friend. The students of Emeacollege of Arts and Science, Kondotty, also did the same thing with the students of English Department, IAIN Lhokseumawe by dividing two people per group. After the delivery of information in English by Tadris English students, then Emeacollege of Arts and Science, Kondotty students who are in charge of receiving and providing information using English explain to their group mates using Malayalam, as well as the process of providing information from Malayalam into English to Tadris English students.

The learning session guided by the lecturer of Translation and Interpreting Practice course who is also the Secretary of English Department, Dr. Nurul Fadhilla, M. Hum., was interactive and attracted the interest of the inter-country students. Dr. Nurul Fadhilla, M. Hum., who is often known as Miss Lulu, helps prevent confusion when learning.

At the end of the activity, the lecturer of Translation and Interpreting Practice course, Dr. Nurul Fadhilla, M. Hum., provided education and understanding to Tadris English students. “Translation uses written text, while Interpreting uses spoken text, so it is more difficult to interpret, because when interpreting has a very short time”, said Miss Lulu. 

The event was closed by giving appreciation by Dr. Nurul Fadhilla, M. Hum., to students for successfully conducting this collaboration class, then held a photo session with students from both campuses.

This activity provides new insights into how social media can be utilized as a tool to preserve culture, as well as an instrument to help carry out education.
